⬇️ You've seen them sleeping in doorways and under awnings, perhaps you've given a few dollars or offered a coffee or a meal. You may have felt sad, worried, frustrated, a bit scared, or even angry. You've wanted to help but what can you do when the need feels so great?

When we encounter someone experiencing chronic homelessness it's normal to feel a range of emotions - the suffering and pain can feel so acute and sometimes we want to lean in and help and other times we want to walk the other way.

What we know for sure is that no one gets better on the street and solving chronic homelessness is essential for our community to flourish. Which is why DTSB created a special Outreach Ambassador position dedicated to helping people get off the streets and access housing, food, employment, mental health services, addiction treatment, and other services.

Since 2017, Chris Anderson has been providing direct outreach on the streets, in alleyways, in parking garages, under viaducts, and in parks - meeting people where they are and getting to know them and making an individualized action plan to help. We know their names and their stories and through Chris' unique blend of persistence, empathy, and humor he builds trust and rapport to help people take the next best step.

A couple years ago we lost 50% of the funding for Chris' position ($30,000) and this program has been operating at a loss. But we feel this role is too important to cut, so on #GivingTuesday we're raising awareness and asking for help to fund this vital outreach work.
